During the Volvo Innovation Days 2018, held from June 20 to 21, Volvo Trucks showed the new Volvo Dynamic Steering features, namely personal settings, lane-keeping assist, stability assist and external steering.

The external steering feature, for example, allows trucks to be controlled remotely. “This will save time, improve productivity, reduce the need to climb in and out of the truck,” Ulf Andreasson, Volvo Trucks’ product manager for FM/FMX, said in Gothenburg, Sweden, on Wednesday.

Aside from that, Volvo Trucks also demonstrated three-truck platooning, where vehicle-to-vehicle communication enabled trucks to follow each other more closely.

“The first vehicle will guide the speed and acceleration. If you hit the brake in the first truck, the second truck will hit the brake at the same time, meaning that you can drive closer in a safe manner,” Sasko Cuklev, Volvo Trucks’ director autonomous solutions, told journalists during the same event.

Although it was currently still a concept, he said the new technology would be developed continuously to match various different scenarios so that it could then be used commercially in the future.

On the first day of the event, numerous speakers from the company discussed several topics such as Volvo’s global business, safety and automation. On the second day, the company will conduct demonstrations of electric trucks. Volvo Innovation Days 2018 demonstrates autonomous tech trends  (dwa, Winny Tang, The Jakarta Post)
