The announcement was made during the Google Cloud NEXT ’19 conference in San Francisco, the United States, on Tuesday. The three-day event is slated to run until Thursday.

According to a statement, the Google Cloud Region is expected to tap into the Indonesian market, particularly startups and enterprises that boast low latency and high performance cloud-based data and workload. Among the companies that are currently running their workload on Google Cloud are Go-Jek, Tokopedia, Tiket.com, Traveloka, Bluebird, CT Corp, Cineplex 21 and Samudera.

Some of the companies, namely Go-Jek and Tokopedia, are expected to participate as speakers at the conference.

“Indonesia is the center of digital power and one of the fastest growing markets of Google Cloud in Southeast Asia,” said Google Cloud’s head for Southeast Asia, Tim Synan, in a statement on Tuesday. “We’ve seen significant business momentum and customers in Indonesia in the past six to 12 months, and we are positive that a new cloud region in Jakarta will open more opportunities for many start-ups and enterprises. They can also take advantage of various tools in Google Cloud on a bigger scale, higher revenue and cost efficiency.”

In the past three years, Google Cloud has opened 15 new regions and 45 zones across 13 countries.

During the conference, the company unveiled two new Google Cloud regions in its global infrastructure, namely Seoul in South Korea and Salt Lake City in Utah, bringing the total number of global regions to 23 in 2020. It is said the Seoul region will be available to customers in early 2020, followed by the Salt Lake City region shortly afterwards.

Prior to the aforementioned regions, Google is slated to open its Osaka region in Japan to customers in the coming weeks.

The year 2020 is expected to be a battle of cloud services for Indonesian customers as Alibaba Cloud already has a footprint in the country. Meanwhile, Amazon Web Services is set to compete in the business sometime in late 2021 or early 2022. As a cloud region, Google provides data storage as well as networking services.
