China, S. Korea show interest in North Sumatra LRT project. The North Sumatra government offered a 160-kilometer light rail transit (LRT) project, connecting the provincial capital of Medan to the Lake Toba resort area, to representatives of countries attending the Asia Europe Meeting-Transport Senior Officials Meeting (ASEM-TSOM) in Medan.
“So far, two countries have expressed an interest in the project, namely China and South Korea,” said North Sumatra Transportation Agency head Muhammad Zein Siregar on the sidelines of the meeting on Wednesday.
Zein added that the North Sumatra government would follow up on the wishes of China and South Korea to invest in the LRT project.
“We want to develop the LRT project as soon as possible because it could support the government program to boost tourism in the Lake Toba resort area,” he said.
The Transportation Ministry’s secretary general, Djoko Sasono, who chaired ASEM-TSOM, said the meeting was a follow-up of the fourth Asia Europe Meeting-Transportation Ministers Meeting that was held in Bali in September last year.
Djoko added that during the meeting, the organizers established an investment corner to exchange information about investment opportunities in ASEM member countries. “Indonesia is offering an investment in transportation infrastructure.”
He said the Medan meeting was held in preparation for the ASEM summit in Hungary next year. The summit’s objective is to strengthen connectivity among member countries, which control 60 percent of the world’s trade. China, S.
