RI Pop Singer Becomes Blueberry Owner

Indonesia’s popular singer Agnes Monica, or popularly known as Agnez Monica, has now become one of majority shareholders in Blueberry smartphones manufacturer PT Ninetology Indonesia. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s third-largest mobile phone operator, PT XL Axiata (EXCL), will see the completion of a new base transceiver station (BTS) and fiber optic cable installations by December.

Agnes, who was previously the brand ambassador for CSL Blueberry, confirmed over the weekend that she was one of majority shareholders in the smarthphone producer. But Agnes did not mention when she acquired the shares and the percentage of the shares she owns.

Agnes, who was nominated for 2013 World Music Awards for Best Female Artist, said with its huge population, Indonesia is quite attractive market for mobile phones.

“The number of mobile phone users in Indonesia is still small,” she was quoted by as saying.

Malaysia-based smart phones manufacturer Ninetology Holdings Sdn. Bhd acquired Blueberry phones manufacturer CSL Mobile Indonesia in August this year. After the acquisition, CSL Mobile Indonesia changed its name into PT Ninetology Indonesia, which then specializes in manufacturing smartphones.

Ninetology had launched their new smartphones products, such as the Phantom Series, to the Indonesian market in early October 2013.

XL Axiata to have more BTS, fiber optics

Meanwhile, the Indonesia’s third-largest mobile phone operator, PT XL Axiata (EXCL), will see the completion of a new base transceiver station (BTS) and fiber optic cable installations by December. The combined infrastructure is expected to boost the quality and speed of wireless data transmission for XL Axiata customers.

XL Axiata’s vice president for project management, Agus P. Simorangkir, told The Jakarta Post on Friday that this year, his company was installing an additional 9,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables. According to him, XL Axiata already had 21,000 km of fiber optic cable installed across Indonesia.
“We started installing the fiber optic cable in January and expect to have the work completed by December,” Agus said on the sidelines of XL Axiata’s 17th anniversary celebrations.

He said the fiber optic cables would connect regions outside Java, especially Samarinda in East Kalimantan, Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan and Minahasa in North Sulawesi.

The company is also aiming to complete the construction of 25 BTS in Central Java by the end of the year.

“We began constructing the BTS in January and expect them to be finished in early November,” he said, adding that XL Axiata currently operated 41,293 BTS across the country.

He said that with the additional BTS and fiber optic cables, his company expected to improve its services in the form of faster buffering and higher video and audio quality.

XL Axiata’s corporate communications general manager, Tri Wahyuningsih, said top-quality data transmission was crucial to be able to compete in the mobile operator industry.

“To stay competitive, we need to increase our costumers’ satisfaction with the quality and speed of our data services. When you open online videos, for example, sometimes you have to wait quite a while for it to buffer and/or the picture is grainy. We are endeavoring to improve that,” Tri said.

She said that XL Axiata had allocated Rp 8 trillion (US$718 million) from its capital expenditure this year for infrastructure development.

“In addition, we have also allocated money for research and development of 4G technology, which allows for even faster video transmission needed, for example, for video conferencing,” she said.

Tri added that the company was waiting for the government to issue a permit to start constructing the infrastructure needed for 4G technology.

“The government is currently reviewing our proposal on the development of 4G technology. Once they issue a license to us, we can begin to construct the necessary infrastructure,” she said. (The Jakarta Post)
