Well thought-out preparation is important to anticipate anything that can go on in the field.

As compiled by kompas.com, here are five smartphone applications that one can use to improve landscape photography results:

PhotoPills

PhotoPills is an application, available both on Android and iOS, which provides detailed information on taking landscape photographs.

It includes an augmented reality (AR) feature to see the positions of objects in the sky and an ability to calculate exposure, depth of field and parameters for time-lapse photography.

Plans devised on this application can be shared with other people, the application costs Rp 149,000 (US$10.33).

Weather & Radar

Available on Android and iOS, Weather & Radar functions as a weather-forecast tool that provides detailed information on the weather in the area of the planned photography expedition.

It provides information on rainfall, wind, air temperature, and other factors in the area up to eight days in advance.

The application is free and can be installed through Google Play and iOS store.

Light Pollution Map

Not all landscape photography needs information regarding light pollution, but this application comes in handy when users wish to observe and photograph the night sky, including constellations, stars and other cosmic bodies.

The application is free, both on Android and iOS, but users must be aware that the free edition tends to have lower accuracy and does not have the ability to save several locations. Users can upgrade to the premium version through an in-app purchase of the application.

ND Exposure Calculator

This application is designed to help determine the exposure of a photograph before taking the shot.

Using it is simple as users only need to insert the shutter speed and insert the type of ND filter they will use. A countdown will then occur to determine the suitable exposure.

This application can be installed for free via the Android and iOS store.

Cascable

Cascable is an application that has the ability to turn one’s smartphone or tablet into a remote control. Any type of camera can be paired with this application, as long as it has a WiFi feature.

This application also has the ability to scan photographs and control shutter speed.

Cascable is only available on iOS and users can install its limited-feature version for free. To experience its full feature, users can purchase the paid version. Landscape photography made easy with these 5 apps  (anm/kes, The Jakarta Post)
